How to apply for a Schengen Visa

Since I am working at one of the foreign missions here in our country, I often receive inquiries from friends and relatives about visa applications. Some questions are really common knowledge and so even if I don’t work for the visa section, I was still able to answer their question.

But a friend who will be traveling to Europe asked me on how she can apply for a Schengen Visa. Honestly, I really don’t have an idea on how to apply for a Schengen Visa so I got curious myself and have looked for information on the net about this type of visitor visa.

The history of Schengen Visa dates back in 1985 when seven European Union countries signed a treaty to end internal border checkpoints and then more countries have joined the treaty. The fifteen Schengen countries are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.

Basically, the Schengen Visa employs a unified visa system so you can enter in one country and then travel freely in any of the Schengen Zone.

So if you plan to travel to only one Schengen country, then you are to apply a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country you wish to visit. If you will be traveling to a number of Schengen country, then you need to apply at the Embassy or Consulate of the country which is your main destination.

Some of the basic requirements required for the application of a Schengen Visa are:
  • Valid passport with at least 6 months validity remaining
  • Completed and signed visa application
  • Passport size photographs
  • Proof of health or accident or travel insurance
  • Copy of complete round trip tickets or confirmed itinery showing exact dates of travel
  • Bank statements or other proofs of funds
